Let us tell you a story
In the misty hills of southwestern Uganda, deep near the edges of the forest, lives a community of people with a history as old as the land itself. The Batwa people were once the guardians of the forest, living in perfect rhythm with nature. They knew every tree, every animal track, every plant with healing powers. For generations, they lived gently and proudly in the heart of what is now a protected conservation area. But when the forests were turned into national parks to protect the endangered mountain gorilla, the Batwa were forced to leave. Their homes, their food sources, their spiritual grounds—all were taken from them in an instant, with no land, compensation, or support to start again.
Today, many Batwa families live in extreme poverty on the fringes of the very forests they once called home. Without access to clean water, education, or reliable health care, their life expectancy has fallen to just twenty eight years. Children often do not go to school. Women and girls walk long distances every day to collect water that is not even safe to drink. Because their literacy levels are low, they have little political voice, and their needs are often ignored. But their spirit remains strong. They are warm, proud, generous people who carry a deep knowledge of the land and an unshakable sense of resilience.
In May, a group of travel agents from around the world came to Uganda. We met the Batwa. We listened to their stories. We danced together. We walked through their villages. We saw the joy they share despite the challenges they face. And something shifted. We fell in love with the country, with its raw beauty, and even more with its people. We realised that with a small group of committed hearts, we could do something that matters. We could start small, together, and create something lasting.g.
That is how Echoes of Ubuntu was born. Ubuntu means humanity. It speaks to the truth that we are all connected, that my well-being is bound to yours. Echoes of Ubuntu is a promise. A promise that when you help one person, the impact ripples outward. We are starting with something simple but vital—clean water. A well may seem small, but it can change everything. It can bring health, education, dignity, and hope. This is not charity. This is community. And we would love for you to be part of it.

Our mission
To restore dignity and opportunity to the Batwa people of Uganda through clean water, healthcare, and community-led empowerment rooted in the African philosophy of Ubuntu — “I am because we are.”
Our vision
To create lasting change by building partnerships rooted in trust, compassion, and shared humanity—empowering the Batwa community to thrive through access to water, education, and opportunity.
How you can help

Tourism is a vital source of income for the Batwa community. Guiding, cultural experiences, crafts, and storytelling help support families and preserve traditions. If you are visiting Uganda, consider adding a Batwa experience to your journey. Travel to Bwindi to visit the gorillas and marvel at the stunning landscapes you will experience. We can connect you with ethical, community-based guides who ensure your visit directly benefits the people. Travel with purpose. Your visit matters.
Donate

Community
For under $20 you can give a family of four access to clean water for an entire year. That one simple gift can help reduce illness, support education, and ease the daily burden of walking long distances for unsafe water. You can make a one-off donation or set up regular giving for ongoing support. Help us make a difference. While our registration is being finalised, we are accepting pledges of support. When giving opens, we will be ready to turn those pledges into real, life-changing action.
If you are interested in volunteering, there are many ways to get involved. Whether you have a medical background, want to help with a building project, or simply have a skill or idea you believe could help, we would love to hear from you. Even if you are unable to travel to Uganda, your talents in areas like marketing, communications, or fundraising can still make a real difference where it matters. Tell us your ideas and let’s bring them to life together.
If you are part of a school, church, or community group looking to fundraise, we would be honoured to partner with you. Whether you are raising money for a well or a larger project, we can provide media, stories, and support to help bring your efforts to life. If you wish to travel and see the impact of your fundraising first hand, we can assist with those arrangements too. Your community can help transform another—one step, one story, one well at a time.
